Chapter 25
Episode 25
Sweat dripped down the steaming hot body of the Drill Instructor
Sweat dripped down the steaming hot body of the Drill Instructor, a testament to the relentless Oregon sun beating down on the training grounds. Sergeant Miller, a man whose muscles seemed to have been carved from granite by sheer will, moved with a fluid power that belied his grupp exterior. Today’s exercise was a particularly grueling one: advanced search and rescue in a simulated collapsed structure, designed to push the firefighters to their absolute limits. Jake Riley, his own formidable physique already slick with exertion, watched his team with a hawk’s eye, but his gaze kept drifting to Sarah Jenkins.
She was in her element, her lean frame coiled with focused energy. Her movements were precise, efficient, a stark contrast to the raw power Jake usually wielded, but no less effective. He saw the determination etched on her grimy face, the way her muscles strained as she navigated a tight crawl space, her breath coming in controlled bursts. He’d seen her grow so much since she first arrived at the station, her initial nervousness replaced by a quiet confidence that made his chest tighten with a feeling that was both pride and something far more personal.
“Jenkins! Faster!” Miller’s voice boomed, cutting through the simulated debris. Sarah didn’t flinch. She pushed forward, her gloved hands finding purchase on a warped piece of wood, her body contorting to slip through a narrow gap. A bead of sweat traced a path from her temple, down her cheek, disappearing into the grime. Jake felt an almost primal urge to reach out, to wipe it away, to offer a word of encouragement that went beyond the professional. But he held back, the unspoken rules of the firehouse a constant barrier.
