Chapter 9
A Kingdom Stirred Anew
As Aurelia awakens, so too does the entire kingdom. The spell is broken, and life rushes back into the castle and its people. The prince and princess share a moment of wonder and recognition.
The world, which had been held in a perpetual, silent twilight, began to exhale. It started with a sigh, a soft rustle of leaves that had been frozen in place for a hundred years, and then a gentle tremor that ran through the stone of the castle walls. Princess Aurelia’s eyelids, heavy as though weighted with centuries of dreams, fluttered open. The first thing she saw was not the dusty, cobweb-laden ceiling of the tower room, but the earnest, hopeful face of Prince Linden, his eyes mirroring the dawn that was now breaking outside.
A strange warmth bloomed in her chest, a feeling both unfamiliar and deeply resonant. It was as if a forgotten melody had suddenly found its voice within her. She blinked, her sapphire eyes adjusting to the light, and a soft gasp escaped her lips. The sorceress’s curse, the endless sleep that had claimed her and her entire kingdom, had been broken. But how? And who was this kind-faced young man who looked at her with such tenderness?
Linden’s heart hammered against his ribs, a joyous drumbeat against the silence that had reigned for so long. He had seen her stir, had felt the faintest pulse beneath her skin quicken, and now, her eyes were open. They were the color of the deepest summer sky, and they held a spark of life that he had only imagined during his arduous journey. He had braced himself for this moment, for the unknown that lay beyond the kiss, but the reality was far more profound than anything he could have conjured in his wildest thoughts.
