Chapter 7
Ascent to the Tower
Having breached the thorny defenses, Linden navigates the silent, sleeping castle. He makes his way to the highest tower, where Princess Aurelia lies in her enchanted slumber, awaiting her fate.
The thorns, a tangled, impenetrable wall of emerald fury, had yielded to the magic sword, their wicked points blunted and their grasping tendrils withdrawn. Now, an eerie silence, thick and heavy as a velvet curtain, descended upon the castle. Prince Linden, his heart a drumbeat against his ribs, stepped through the now-parted brambles, the sword humming faintly in his grip. The air, once alive with the distant sounds of a bustling kingdom, was now unnervingly still, the only whisper the rustle of his own movements.
He found himself in a courtyard, bathed in the pale, unchanging light of a perpetual afternoon. Stone statues of knights and mythical beasts stood frozen in stoic poses, their sculpted eyes seeming to watch him with an ancient, unblinking gaze. A fountain, its water stilled mid-cascade, looked like a crystal sculpture, a testament to the enchanted sleep that had claimed this place. Every leaf on every tree, every blade of grass in the manicured gardens, was locked in a tableau of suspended animation. It was a kingdom held captive, a breath held too long.
Linden’s gaze swept across the silent grandeur. He was a prince, accustomed to the vibrant life of his own court, to the laughter of his people, the clinking of armour, the joyous chirping of birds. This quiet was profound, almost suffocating. It spoke of a deep sorrow, a kingdom robbed of its very essence. He thought of Princess Aurelia, the kind maiden whose name had been whispered to him by the wise eagle, the maiden whose slumber was the heart of this vast stillness. His determination, already a burning ember, flared into a steady flame. He had to reach her.
