The cold seeped through the thin soles of my worn slippers, a familiar chill that seemed to emanate not just from the floorboards, but from the very air of this house. Sahara, huddled beside me on the window seat, shivered, her small hand clutching mine like a lifeline. Outside, the bruised twilight bled into night, painting the world in shades of grey and purple that mirrored the landscape of my own thoughts. The locket, cool and heavy in my palm, felt like a secret I was both desperate to keep and compelled to unravel.

"It's beautiful, isn't it?" Sahara whispered, her voice barely disturbing the silence. She was looking at the locket, its silver dulled with age, but still catching the faint light from the dying embers in the hearth.

"It was Mother's," I replied, my voice softer than I intended. The words felt like a caress, a memory I clung to. Mother. Her scent, her laughter, the way she’d hummed old lullabies as she mended our clothes – these were precious fragments I hoarded, shielding them from the harsh glare of Aunt Elara’s disapproval.
