Dust motes danced in the slivers of light that pierced the gloom of the attic, each one a tiny, suspended ghost. Sahara coughed, a small, dry sound that seemed to get swallowed by the vastness of the space. I shielded my eyes, trying to make out the shapes shrouded in the gloom. Aunt Elara had forbidden us from coming up here, a rule she enforced with a sharpness that always made my teeth ache. But the locket, with its strange, swirling script, had whispered secrets to me, urging me to look, to search, to find. And Sahara, bless her trembling heart, had followed.

We’d spent what felt like hours sifting through the detritus of forgotten lives. Old hatboxes, their ribbons brittle with age, lay scattered like fallen leaves. A rocking horse, its paint chipped and one eye missing, stared blankly into the darkness. It was a graveyard of memories, and I felt a strange kinship with the silence that permeated it.

“Lucian,” Sahara whispered, her voice barely a breath. She pointed a hesitant finger towards a large, battered steamer trunk tucked away in a corner, half-hidden by a draped sheet. It was made of dark, scarred leather, its brass fittings tarnished and dull. It looked like it had traveled the world, carrying stories we could only guess at.
