Aunt Elara notices the sisters' growing inquisitiveness. She tightens her grip, her smiles becoming more strained, her watchful eyes missing nothing, increasing their apprehension.
Aunt Elara’s smile, once a brittle thing that cracked at the edges, was now a polished, gleaming shield. It was the kind of smile that promised sunshine and delivered frost. She’d always been a creature of sharp angles and hurried movements, her voice a low hum that could quickly escalate into a rasping shriek. But lately, a new layer had been added, a veneer of almost suffocating sweetness that felt more unnerving than her usual temper. It was as if she was consciously trying to mend the frayed edges of her persona, to make herself appear… normal. And that, more than anything, was what set my teeth on edge.
Sahara, ever the sensitive one, felt it too. Her quietude had deepened, transforming from a gentle reserve into a fragile shell that threatened to shatter at the slightest tremor. She’d taken to watching Aunt Elara with wide, unblinking eyes, her small hands often clasped so tightly that her knuckles turned white. I’d catch her glancing at me, a silent plea for reassurance in her gaze, and I’d offer a weak smile, a squeeze of her hand, anything to anchor her. But inside, my own unease was a cold knot in my stomach, tightening with every forced pleasantry, every overly solicitous question.
"Lucian, dear," Aunt Elara crooned, her voice like honey laced with arsenic, as she entered the kitchen one morning. The sunlight, filtering through the grimy windowpanes, seemed to recoil from her. She held a plate of perfectly browned biscuits, their aroma a cruel mockery of the stale bread we usually ate. "You’ve been so quiet lately. Are you feeling quite well?"
