The chill of the attic air clung to me like a second skin, a familiar dampness that mirrored the perpetual gloom of our lives. Dust motes danced in the slivers of moonlight that pierced the grimy windowpanes, illuminating forgotten relics of a past that felt both distant and hauntingly close. Sahara, ever the shadow to my light, huddled beside me, her small hands clasped so tightly her knuckles were white. The locket, cool and smooth against my palm, felt like a key, a promise of something more than the suffocating present.

"Do you think anyone remembers him, Lu?" Sahara’s voice was a whisper, barely disturbing the silence. It was a question that hung heavy between us, a testament to the years of his absence, years during which Aunt Elara had meticulously scrubbed his memory from our lives, leaving only a void.

I traced the intricate engraving on the locket’s surface, the tiny, almost invisible symbols that Mother had pressed into my hand so long ago. "Of course, they do, Saha. He was our father. People don't just… forget." The words felt hollow, even to me. We were so young when he left, or so Aunt Elara claimed. A business trip, she’d said, a very long one. But the way her eyes would dart away, the tight set of her jaw, always spoke of a different story, a story she guarded with a ferocity that bordered on madness.
