An Engraved Enigma
The locket opens to reveal a faded portrait and a cryptic inscription. Lucian pores over the symbols, a puzzle forming in her mind, stirring a deep sense of curiosity and purpose.
The locket felt cool against my palm, a small, smooth weight that had been a constant companion since its discovery. Aunt Elara had never mentioned it, never once gestured towards the velvet-lined box tucked away in the deepest corner of Mother’s old dressing table, a place we’d been forbidden to touch. But there it was, nestled amongst forgotten lace and dried lavender, a silent testament to a life we barely remembered. Sahara had been the one to find it, her small fingers tracing the intricate floral carvings on its surface. She’d held it out to me, her eyes wide with a mixture of awe and trepidation, as if it were a captured bird that might take flight at any moment.
“Lucian,” she’d whispered, her voice barely audible above the ticking of the grandfather clock in the hall, a sound that always seemed to measure out our lives in long, drawn-out breaths. “It’s Mother’s.”
And it was. The delicate gold chain, the tiny clasp that had resisted my initial fumbling attempts, the familiar weight of it pressed against my skin now – all of it hummed with a forgotten familiarity. But it was what lay within that truly captured my attention, that snagged at the edges of my mind and refused to let go.
