The Open Door
With hearts pounding, they slip out into the night, leaving behind the oppressive house and the cruel woman who had stolen their father and their innocence.
The hinges of the back door groaned a protest, a sound amplified in the suffocating silence of the night. Each rasp was a tiny hammer blow against my already frayed nerves, a symphony of fear conducted by the frantic thumping of my own heart. Beside me, Sahara’s breath hitched, a shallow, ragged sound that did little to soothe the tremor in my hands. We were poised on the precipice, the threshold between a life of suffocating dread and an unknown expanse of freedom, or perhaps, an even deeper abyss.
The air outside was cool, carrying the damp, earthy scent of the garden after a recent rain. It was a stark contrast to the stale, suffocating atmosphere of the house, a place that had become synonymous with our aunt’s chilling presence and the phantom ache of our father’s absence. Every shadow seemed to writhe with unspoken threats, every rustle of leaves a phantom footstep, a harbinger of discovery. My mind, usually a keen observer, felt dulled by a potent cocktail of adrenaline and sheer terror. I could feel Sahara’s small hand, cold and clammy, gripping mine with a desperation that mirrored my own. Her knuckles were white, her gaze fixed on the sliver of moon peeking through the bruised clouds, as if seeking a silent blessing for our desperate flight.
“Are you sure, Luci?” Her whisper was barely audible, a fragile thread of sound that threatened to snap. Her eyes, wide and luminous in the dim light, pleaded for reassurance, for a certainty I was far from possessing.
