The moon hung like a sliver of bone in the bruised velvet of the night sky, offering little comfort. Inside the suffocating quiet of the house, Sahara and I moved like wraiths. Each breath felt amplified, each rustle of cloth a thunderclap. The air itself seemed to hold its breath, taut with the unspoken fear that Elara might stir from her sleep, her sharp ears catching the faintest tremor of our escape.

My heart hammered against my ribs, a frantic bird desperate for release. It was a symphony of dread, conducted by the memory of her veiled threats, the chilling glint in her eyes when she spoke of ‘consequences.’ But beneath the fear, a current of resolve flowed, strong and steady. The locket, cool against my skin beneath my shift, was a constant reminder of why we had to do this. Mother’s locket. The key. The truth.

Sahara, usually so quick to flinch at the slightest noise, was a study in quiet discipline. Her eyes, wide and dark in the gloom, darted between me and the hallway, a silent sentinel. She clutched the small, worn satchel I’d filled with bread, cheese, and the few coins we’d managed to pilfer over weeks of careful hoarding. Her hands, usually so delicate, were clasped so tightly her knuckles had turned white. I squeezed her hand, a silent promise of protection. She squeezed back, a tremor running through her small frame.
