The chill of the attic still clung to me, a damp shroud woven from dust and despair. Lucian’s words, barely a breath against the oppressive silence, had settled in my bones like ice. *We have to go, Sahara. Now.* The urgency in her voice was a stark contrast to her usual quiet resolve, a tremor that spoke of a fear she rarely showed. And if Lucian was afraid, truly afraid, then the shadows outside this suffocating house must be vast and terrifying indeed.
I looked at her, my sister, my anchor in this tempest of a life. Her eyes, usually bright with a fierce intelligence, were clouded with a weariness that went beyond our years. “Lucian…” My voice was a fragile thread, easily snapped. I swallowed, trying to gather the scattered pieces of my courage. The image of Aunt Elara’s face, her eyes like chips of obsidian, flashed behind my eyelids. The way she’d looked at the locket, the sudden tightening of her lips, the almost imperceptible flinch. It was all there, in the quiet moments, in the spaces between her carefully crafted smiles. Lucian saw it too. She always saw more than I did.
