The air in our small room had grown thin, thick with the stale scent of fear and the unspoken dread that clung to us like damp wool. Aunt Elara’s shadow, once a looming presence, had begun to warp and twist into something monstrous, its tendrils reaching into every corner of our meager existence. Even in the dim light filtering through the grimy glass, I could see the dark circles under her eyes, the way her small frame trembled. She was a bird with a broken wing, and my heart ached with the fierce, protective love that warred with the burgeoning terror inside me.
