The splintered wood of the attic floor was rough beneath my knees, each sharp edge a tiny echo of the larger splinter that had just pierced my heart. Sahara’s hand, small and trembling, was a warm anchor in mine. We sat in the suffocating silence, the dust motes dancing in the slivers of light that dared to penetrate the gloom, illuminating the grim tableau before us. The trunk, once a repository of forgotten toys and moth-eaten blankets, now held a truth so monumental, so devastating, it threatened to crush us.
Inside, nestled amongst yellowed linens and the faint, ghostly scent of lavender, lay the proof. Not just a broken pocket watch, its face cracked like a spiderweb, but a small, leather-bound journal. It was Father’s. I recognized the familiar, sturdy script instantly, the way he’d underline words with a flourish when he was particularly pleased with himself. But there was no pleasure here. The entries were sporadic, growing more frantic as the pages turned, a desperate chronicle of a man who knew he was losing something precious.
*“Elara grows more agitated each day,”* one entry read, dated just weeks before he vanished. *“Her eyes hold a darkness I no longer recognize. She speaks of… debts. Of consequences. I fear for us. I fear for my girls.”*
