The air in the parlor felt thicker than usual, heavy with the scent of stale lavender and something else, something metallic and sharp that I couldn't quite place. Aunt Elara sat by the dying embers of the fire, her knitting needles clicking with a rhythm that usually soothed Sahara, but tonight, it sounded like a frantic, discordant drumbeat. Sahara, nestled beside me on the worn velvet sofa, traced the patterns on my sleeve, her small fingers trembling. We had found it, tucked away in the dusty trunk in the attic, beneath layers of moth-eaten lace and yellowed photographs. Mother’s locket. And inside, the inscription.

"It's beautiful, isn't it, Aunt Elara?" I began, my voice surprisingly steady. I held the locket up, letting the faint firelight catch the intricate filigree. Sahara squeezed my arm, her eyes wide, fixed on our aunt.

Aunt Elara’s needles paused. Her head snapped up, the movement abrupt, jarring. Her eyes, usually sharp and assessing, darted towards the locket, then to my face. A muscle in her jaw twitched. "Your mother had… peculiar tastes," she said, her voice a little too smooth, a little too brittle. "She was always drawn to the unusual."
