The air in the lower sectors of Jurbarkas was a thick, cloying soup of rust and despair. Anya, her red lenses filtering the perpetual gloom into a kaleidoscope of hidden anxieties, navigated the labyrinthine alleys with a practiced tread. Her fingers, usually busy tracing the cool, worn beads of her necklace, now clenched and unclenched at her sides. The whispers had started days ago, insidious tendrils of hope twisted into something sharp and dangerous. They spoke of escape, of power, of a way out of the suffocating grip of the Pentagon and the gnawing hunger that was a constant companion.

These whispers, Anya’s lenses revealed, emanated from the deepest, most forgotten corners of the city. They were not the honest, hopeful murmurs of change, but the frantic, desperate prayers of those who had nothing left to lose. They spoke of rituals, of ancient words whispered in the dark, of a pact to be made with something old and hungry. They spoke of the Devil.

She found herself drawn to a disused maintenance shaft, its entrance choked with discarded, twisted metal. The air here hummed with a different kind of energy, a frantic, crackling anticipation that made the hairs on Anya’s arms stand on end. Her lenses pulsed, showing her not just the grime and decay, but the swirling eddies of desperation that clung to the very bricks. Faces, gaunt and etched with a weariness that went soul-deep, were turned towards a makeshift altar fashioned from rusted barrels and scavenged circuit boards.
