The air in Jurbarkas had always been thick, a gritty stew of industry and neglect. But lately, Anya noticed a new kind of chill seeping through the metal and grime, a subtle decay that felt different from the usual weariness of the city. It was like a whisper, a shadow that slithered at the edges of her vision, even through her beloved red lenses. Her lenses, usually so vibrant, seemed to catch a duller hue in this new atmospheric shift, the hidden truths they revealed now tinged with a creeping dread.
She sat on a discarded girder, the rough metal cool against her worn trousers, watching the city breathe its ragged, industrial breath. The familiar clatter of machinery, the distant hum of the Pentagon’s omnipresent surveillance drones – these were the sounds of her world. But beneath them, a new resonance was beginning to form, a low thrum that vibrated in her bones, unsettling and alien.
"It feels… wrong, doesn't it?" a voice piped up beside her. It was Leo, his small frame hunched against the wind, his usual bright eyes clouded with a similar unease. He was fiddling with a loose bolt on a nearby deactivated conveyor belt, his hands perpetually busy.
