Anya felt it deep within her, a prickle along her spine that mirrored the glow of her red lenses. The city was holding its breath, waiting.
She stood on a rusting gantry overlooking the main plaza, a place usually teeming with weary faces and hurried footsteps. Tonight, however, it was a different kind of gathering. Shadows danced in the flickering gaslight, and hushed conversations, laced with desperation, drifted upwards. Anya adjusted her red lenses, their crimson tint bleeding into the murky reality of Jurbarkas, revealing the faint, insidious tendrils of the Proton’s Value coiling around the edges of the square. It was a sickly, pulsing energy, promising a quick, intoxicating escape from the gnawing hardship, a sweet poison whispering of oblivion.
Beside her, Kael, his face etched with a familiar worry, clutched a worn sack of salvaged parts. "They're restless, Anya. More than usual. The whispers of the Devil… they’re growing louder." His voice was low, a rumble against the city's symphony of decay.
