The air in Jurbarkas had always tasted of metal and dust, but lately, it carried a new tang – a bitter, metallic scent that clung to the back of Anya’s throat. It was the scent of the ‘Proton’s Value’ tightening its grip, a slow, creeping rot that seemed to seep from the very foundations of the city. Through her red lenses, the world was a tapestry of anxieties, the usual grime and decay now overlaid with pulsing, sickly green tendrils that snaked from the industrial heart of Jurbarkas, wrapping around the meager dwellings and the weary souls within.

She saw it most clearly in the faces of the people. The usual stoicism, the practiced weariness, was giving way to a raw desperation. Anya had found herself drawn to the lower sectors, where the pipes groaned with a particularly mournful sound and the air was thickest with the sickly sweet odor of decay. Here, amidst the dripping condensation and the shadows that danced like hungry specters, whispers of the ‘Devil’ were growing louder.

One evening, as the perpetual twilight of Jurbarkas deepened, Anya perched on a rusted pipe overlooking a small, grimy square. A knot of people had gathered, their hushed voices carrying on the damp air. Through her lenses, Anya could see the faint, shimmering outlines of arcane symbols being drawn in the dirt with trembling fingers. The air around them thrummed with a dangerous energy, a stark contrast to the usual drone of the city.
