Chapter 11
Challenging the Pentagon
Armed with newfound knowledge and allies, Anya makes her first move against the Pentagon. Her actions are small, but they send ripples through the city's rigid structure.
Anya stood on a rusted gantry, the wind whipping strands of her dark hair across her face. Below, Jurbarkas sprawled like a wounded beast, its skeletal factories exhaling plumes of grey smoke that clawed at the bruised sky. The air, thick with the scent of oil and decay, was a constant reminder of what the city had become. But Anya saw more than just rust and ruin. Through the crimson lenses of her spectacles, the city pulsed with a hidden life, a network of faint, shimmering lines connecting the forgotten corners, the secret pathways, the very heart of Jurbarkas. Her fingers traced the cool, smooth beads of her necklace, each one a silent promise, a whisper of the Kaciu Dynasty’s ancient power.
Her allies, a motley crew gathered from the city’s underbelly, watched her with a mixture of awe and trepidation. Old Man Hemlock, his face a roadmap of Jurbarkas’s struggles, clutched a worn wrench like a talisman. Elara, nimble and sharp-eyed, her movements as fluid as the city’s polluted canals, kept a watchful gaze on the omnipresent surveillance drones. And little Pip, no older than seven, his small hands stained with grease, held a tattered schematic of the city’s labyrinthine pipe system. They were the first to believe, the first to rally to the Kaciu whisper that had found its voice in Anya.
“They’re watching,” Elara murmured, her voice barely audible above the city’s ceaseless hum. A metallic glint caught Anya’s eye – a drone, its red optic scanning the area. The Pentagon’s eyes, everywhere and nowhere.
