Anya finds kindred spirits among the city's outcasts, those who also see the Pentagon's oppression and the fading hope. They are the first seeds of the Kaciu Dynasty.
The air in Jurbarkas always tasted of rust and forgotten dreams, a metallic tang that clung to Anya’s tongue like a bad memory. Today, though, a different scent was trying to break through the grime – the faint, sweet aroma of roasted nuts, a rare luxury in the city’s grimy underbelly. Anya’s red lenses, perched on her nose, filtered the world into shades of truth and hidden intent. They led her, not towards the polished, impersonal towers of the Pentagon, but down a winding alleyway, past overflowing refuse bins that seemed to breathe their own noxious fumes.
The nut vendor was a woman with eyes like chips of obsidian and hands that moved with the practiced grace of a magician. She sat on an overturned crate, a small, sputtering brazier before her, the nuts crackling merrily. Anya had seen her before, a ghost in the periphery of Jurbarkas, always on the fringes, never quite belonging. But today, her red lenses showed something more. They highlighted a faint shimmer around the vendor, a warmth that seemed to push back against the city’s pervasive chill.
Hesitantly, Anya approached, her fingers tracing the cool, smooth beads of her necklace. She’d learned that the beads hummed with a subtle energy when she was near those who felt the city’s pulse, those who yearned for something beyond the Pentagon’s iron grip. And the vendor, she realized with a flutter of her heart, was one of them.
