The air in the forest was a living thing, thick with the scent of damp earth and decaying leaves, punctuated by the sharp, clean aroma of pine. Father Alex moved through it with a practiced grace, his bare feet finding purchase on moss-covered roots and yielding soil. Each step was a prayer, each rustle of leaves a whispered word from the spirits. The weight of the village’s suffering pressed upon him, a constant thrum beneath his skin, yet here, under the cathedral of ancient trees, a different kind of presence enveloped him. This was Oxóssi’s domain, and he was its devoted son, its humble supplicant.

He paused by a gurgling stream, the water so clear he could see the smooth, grey stones at its bed. He cupped his hands, bringing the cool liquid to his lips. As he drank, a flicker of movement caught his eye. A hummingbird, its iridescent feathers a blur of sapphire and emerald, hovered near a cluster of delicate, bell-shaped flowers. It was unlike any he had seen before, its petals a vibrant, almost unnatural shade of green.
