The sterile scent of antiseptic clung to Rey like a second skin, a stark contrast to the familiar, comforting aroma of old books and Anne’s faint floral perfume that usually permeated his world. He sat on the edge of the examination table, the thin paper gown doing little to ward off the chill that had nothing to do with the room’s temperature. Dr. Ramirez, a man whose usual gentle demeanor now seemed etched with a weariness Rey hadn't noticed before, shuffled through a stack of papers. The fluorescent lights overhead hummed a low, ominous tune, amplifying the silence that stretched between them.

“Rey,” Dr. Ramirez began, his voice soft but firm, “the tests came back. It’s… not good news.”

The words hung in the air, heavy and suffocating. Rey’s breath hitched, a sharp, sudden pain in his chest. He’d known, of course. The relentless fatigue, the gnawing ache that had become a constant companion, the way his body seemed to be betraying him at every turn. Still, hearing it spoken aloud, by a doctor, in this stark, clinical room, made it irrevocably real.
