The air in the library, usually a comforting balm to Floria’s overthinking mind, felt thick and heavy. Sunlight, filtering through the tall arched windows, usually painted dancing patterns on the worn wooden tables. Today, however, it seemed to spotlight only the growing unease in her chest. She traced the intricate lines of a botanical illustration in her notebook, the delicate veins of a leaf a stark contrast to the tangled mess of her thoughts. It had been weeks since Ms. Albright had announced their year-long project partnership, weeks of shared glances, quiet collaboration, and the slow unfurling of a tentative connection. A comment from Amelia, her friend, laced with a playful but pointed curiosity about her “project partner.” Amelia, bless her straightforward heart, couldn’t quite grasp the delicate dance Floria and Ethan were engaged in. “He’s so quiet, Flo,” Amelia had said, her brow furrowed. “Are you sure you’re not just imagining things? Sometimes quiet people are just… quiet.”

Floria had tried to brush it off, to dismiss Amelia’s well-intentioned but, in this instance, irritatingly pragmatic observation. But the seed of doubt had been sown.
