While trying to learn more about the symbols, Maya overhears hushed conversations mentioning a hidden treasure and an ancient prophecy. The cryptic words fuel her determination to understand Leo's connection.
The worn linoleum of the school hallway echoed with the usual midday chatter, a symphony of slamming lockers and hurried footsteps. Maya, however, was attuned to a different frequency, a subtle hum of hushed tones that snagged her attention. She’d been tracing the intricate curves of the symbol etched into the cover of her notebook, the one she’d seen on Leo’s sketchbook, on the old oak tree by the park, and now, faintly, on a flyer pinned to the community board. It felt like a secret language, and she was determined to be fluent.
She’d lingered near the teachers’ lounge, a precarious perch between the bustling corridor and the hushed sanctuary of adult conversations. A sliver of light spilled from the open doorway, and the murmur of voices, usually a dull drone, now held a sharp edge of intrigue.
“...the old legends speak of it,” a low, gravelly voice said, too familiar to be a stranger. It was Mr. Henderson, the history teacher, a man who usually droned on about ancient civilizations with the enthusiasm of a sleepy owl.
