Beside her, Leo’s hand, usually cool and steady, felt unnaturally warm, his fingers laced tightly with hers. They stood at the edge of the old oak grove, the gnarled branches reaching like skeletal fingers towards a bruised, twilight sky. This was it. The place the ancient texts had hinted at, the heart of the riddle, the final resting place of the artifact.
Across the clearing, figures emerged from the deepening shadows. Not just one or two, but a phalanx of them, their cloaks blending with the encroaching darkness. The leader, a silhouette against the dying light, stepped forward. Maya couldn’t make out features, but the aura of cold ambition radiating from them was palpable, a chilling counterpoint to Leo’s quiet strength.
“So,” a voice, smooth and devoid of warmth, slithered through the trees. “The guardian and his little human friend. You’ve led us right to it.”
