Race Against Time
A frantic race against time ensues as Maya and Leo move to protect the artifact. The organization is hot on their heels, determined to seize it before they can secure it.
The air crackled with a tension that had been building for weeks, a low hum beneath the surface of their ordinary lives. Now, it was a roaring inferno. Maya’s heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic drumbeat against the encroaching silence. Leo’s hand, usually cool and steady, felt almost feverish in hers as they ran. The worn leather of his backpack, stuffed with the few things they dared to take, scraped against her arm.
“Are they close?” Maya gasped, her breath catching in her throat. The cobblestone streets, usually so familiar, felt alien and treacherous under the pale moonlight. Every shadow seemed to writhe with unseen menace, every distant sound a harbinger of pursuit.
Leo didn’t answer immediately. His gaze, usually so focused and calm, was now a wild, desperate search across the darkened alleys and deserted storefronts. “I can feel them,” he finally murmured, his voice tight with strain. “They’re… hungry. Like hounds on a scent.”
