The air in the abandoned observatory hung thick with the scent of dust and forgotten dreams. Moonlight, slivering through a cracked dome, painted ethereal stripes across the decaying floorboards. Leo stood by a colossal, rusted telescope, his silhouette stark against the faint glow. Maya watched him from the doorway, her heart a hummingbird trapped in her chest. The weight of his secret, the terrifying truth of his world, pressed down on them both, a tangible force that had driven them to this desolate place.

"You don't have to do this, you know," Maya whispered, her voice barely disturbing the silence. She stepped further into the room, her sneakers crunching on fallen plaster.

Leo turned, his eyes, usually guarded, now held a flicker of something akin to desperation. The usual calm that cloaked him was fractured, revealing the strain of his burden. "It's not about what I *have* to do, Maya. It's about what I *must*." He gestured vaguely towards the darkened corners of the observatory. "They're getting closer. I can feel it."
