Chapter 7
The Price of Peace
Silas reflects on a contract that brought a fragile peace, but at a steep personal cost, leaving him with a lingering emptiness.
The air in Silas’s study was thick with the scent of old leather, dried blood, and the faint, metallic tang of ozone. Moonlight, fractured by the leaded panes of the window, painted stripes across the room, illuminating dust motes dancing in the stillness. At the center of it all, slumped in a massive armchair, was the corpse of Kaelen. His eyes, fixed in a glassy stare, seemed to watch Silas with a familiar, silent amusement. Around them, on polished mahogany tables and velvet-draped pedestals, rested the trophies: a crystalline shard humming with captured starlight, a petrified bloom pulsing with residual fear, a miniature obsidian fortress, its silent inhabitants forever frozen in a moment of terror. “Remember the Whispering God, Kaelen?” he asked, the words swallowed by the vastness of the room. “The one who thought his divinity was a shield? He’d been ripped from his own plane, screaming about the arrogance of mortality. Thought he could reshape reality with a thought. I found him in the throat of a dying star, trying to pull its light into himself. He was… radiant. And so very, very loud.”
