The stale air of the vault tasted of dust and dried blood, a familiar perfume Silas had cultivated over decades. Moonlight, thin and spectral, bled through the single barred window, illuminating the clutter of his life’s work. Trophies, meticulously preserved, gleamed dully: the obsidian shard of a fallen star-whale, the petrified eye of a Gorgon, the shimmering, impossibly delicate skull of a whisper-sprite. They were his audience, silent witnesses to the stories he was about to tell.

And then there was Kael.

Kael lay on a slab of cold, grey stone, his face peaceful, a stark contrast to the life Silas had known him to lead. The dark stain on his tunic had long since dried, a permanent testament to the finality of it all. Silas ran a calloused thumb over the smooth, cool surface of Kael’s temple. “You always hated the quiet, didn’t you, old friend?” he murmured, his voice a low rumble against the profound silence. “Said it was where the real monsters bred.”
