The air in Silas’s workshop was thick with the scent of old blood and something metallic, like ozone after a lightning strike. Dust motes danced in the single beam of moonlight that pierced the grimy skylight, illuminating the grim tableau. Silas sat on an overturned crate, his scarred hands clasped loosely between his knees. Across from him, propped against a workbench scarred with a thousand forgotten battles, was the still, pale form of Kael. His eyes, once sharp and full of a dangerous mirth, were now glazed, unseeing. A single, neat hole marred his sternum, the entry point of a blade that had been too swift, too final.

Silas didn’t speak for a long time, letting the silence stretch and settle like a shroud. The trophies of his life, arranged with meticulous care on shelves and tables, seemed to watch him: the crystalline shard of a dying star, the petrified roar of a beast that had once shaken mountains, the gilded cage of a songbird from a forgotten heaven. Each was a testament, a marker on the brutal, winding road that had led him here.

“You always hated the quiet, didn’t you, Kael?” Silas’s voice was a low rumble, like stones grinding together. “Said it was the sound of things waiting to happen. And you were never wrong.” He gestured with his chin towards the corpse. “This is the last of the waiting, old friend.”
