The air in the house was thick, heavy with unspoken words and the cloying scent of stale regret. Elara moved through its rooms like a ghost, a wraith in her own home, each step measured, each breath a conscious effort to remain small, invisible. This was the gilded cage, a place of superficial beauty that masked a rot deep within its foundations. Her half-siblings, Seraphina and Caspian, were the architects of this suffocating reality, their every glance a judgment, their every word a barbed arrow.

Breakfast was a ritual of silent torment. Elara sat at the far end of the long mahogany table, her plate a meager offering of dry toast and weak tea, while Seraphina and Caspian feasted on a spread that felt like a deliberate mockery. Seraphina, with her perfectly coiffed blonde hair and eyes like chips of ice, would occasionally cast a disdainful look her way, a silent accusation hanging in the air. Caspian, broad-shouldered and perpetually scowling, would grunt his displeasure if Elara dared to make a sound, any sound at all, that disturbed the oppressive quiet.

“You’re eating again,” Seraphina’s voice, sharp as shattered glass, cut through the silence one morning. It wasn't a question, but an indictment.
