Elara sat with the worn leather journal open on her lap, its pages brittle with age and filled with her mother's elegant, looping script. She’d found it tucked away in a dusty wooden chest in the attic of the old house, a place she hadn't dared to explore for years. The air in the attic was thick with the scent of forgotten things – dried lavender, mothballs, and the faint, melancholic perfume of old paper. It was a scent that clung to memories, some sweet, some sharp.
She traced the faded ink of her mother’s words, each sentence a delicate thread weaving a tapestry of a life Elara had only glimpsed through the fractured lens of her own childhood. Her mother, a woman she barely remembered, had been a ghost in the house, a presence felt more in her absence than in any tangible form. "She writes about you, you know," Mrs. Gable, the kind, elderly neighbor who had become a quiet guardian to Elara in her youth, had said softly when Elara had confessed her discovery. "Your mother. She loved you very much. Even when… even when things were difficult."
