The chill of the waning night still clung to Detective Miles Thorne’s skin, a clammy reminder of the grim tableau he’d just left behind. He stood on the periphery, a lone sentinel against the encroaching dawn, his breath misting in the frigid air. The scene was a brutal ballet of flashing lights and hushed urgency, the yellow tape a stark barrier against the encroaching normality of the world. This was the third one. The third life extinguished under the shroud of darkness, leaving behind only a void and a gnawing unease that permeated the usually quiet streets of Oakhaven.

He pulled his collar tighter, his gaze sweeping over the methodical work of the forensics team. Each sweep of a brush, each carefully bagged piece of evidence, felt like a futile gesture against a phantom. The perpetrator was a ghost, a whisper in the wind, leaving no discernible fingerprints, no forced entry, just… absence. A sleek, black creature with eyes like chips of emerald, reflecting the harsh glare of the police cruisers. It was the same cat. He’d seen it before, a fleeting shadow at the edge of his vision, a silent witness at each of the previous crime scenes. At first, he'd dismissed it as a stray, a creature of habit drawn to the disruption. But there was something in its stillness, its unwavering gaze, that pricked at his intuition. It watched him, not with the skittishness of a normal animal, but with an unnerving, assessing calm.
