The first hint of gray, a tentative whisper against the inky black, was a cruel, undeniable summons. It seeped into the marrow, a primal ache that no amount of human will could suppress. The Night Stalker, still cloaked in the shadow of a narrow alleyway, felt the change begin. It was a familiar agony, a tightening in the limbs, a blurring at the edges of vision. The stolen humanity, a borrowed skin that had served its vengeful purpose, was beginning to fray.

He – for in this form, he felt undeniably male, a vessel of raw, unadulterated fury – pressed himself deeper into the refuse, the stench of decay a comforting counterpoint to the rising panic. The night had been… productive. A slow, deliberate hunt, a methodical closing of a circle that had been left gaping and raw for far too long. The memory of the last encounter, the desperate pleas, the choked gasps, was a dark, satisfying ember warming his chest. But the ember was about to be doused by the unforgiving sun.

A distant siren wailed, a mournful cry that always seemed to chase him. He flattened himself further, one hand – a hand that had only hours before been a paw, sharp and ready – gripping the rough brick. The streets, so alive with his predatory stride just moments ago, were beginning to stir. The first rumblings of the city waking, the early risers, the shift workers, the insomniacs. Each sound was a potential witness, each flicker of light a threat.
