The city breathed a sigh of relief, a collective exhalation of unease that had settled over its streets like a damp, clinging fog. The disappearances, once a nightly terror, had ceased. The whispers, however, had not. They swirled in hushed tones in dimly lit bars, echoed in nervous glances across crowded squares, and found their way into the meticulously organized files of Detective Miles Thorne. He’d been so close, he could feel it in his bones, a gnawing certainty that the shadowy figure he’d glimpsed, the phantom that seemed to melt into the very fabric of the night, was real.

The alleyway, a familiar hunting ground, was Thorne’s current obsession. It was here, amidst the overflowing dumpsters and the graffiti-scarred brick, that the last known victim had vanished. Thorne, his trench coat collar pulled high against the chill, traced the outline of a fresh scratch mark on a metal bin with a gloved finger. It was too high for an animal, too deliberate for random vandalism. His gaze swept the grimy expanse, the flickering sodium lamps casting long, distorted shadows that danced like specters. He felt a prickle of unease, a phantom sensation of being watched.

He’d been following a hunch, a thread of intuition that had led him back to this particular forgotten corner of the city. The Night Stalker, as the tabloids had sensationalized the elusive killer, had a pattern, Thorne believed. A specific kind of victim. They were people on the fringes, those who had, in some way, been discarded. And this alley, with its discarded lives and forgotten promises, felt like a nexus.
