The air in the squat was thick, a cloying mixture of stale sweat, old piss, and the chemical sweetness of burnt foil. It always was. That smell had become the atmosphere I breathed, the scent of my life. I remember staring at the water stain on the ceiling, a vast, dark continent spreading across the crumbling plaster, and feeling nothing. Absolutely nothing. That was the worst part, the nothingness that followed the high—a deadening clarity where every decision, every scar, every empty promise echoed simultaneously, yet felt utterly immaterial.

It was late afternoon, or maybe early morning; the rhythm of the street dictated time, not a clock. I was huddled near the radiator, which was cold because it was August and the superintendent had shut the heat off weeks ago, though the chill in this forgotten basement unit seemed perpetual anyway. Spike was elsewhere, probably hustling or getting into some kind of trouble that would eventually spill over onto me, drawing me back into the fray like iron filings to a magnet.

I hadn't scored in nearly twenty-four hours. The shakes were setting in—a fine tremor starting in my fingertips and threatening to consume my whole body. Head pounding, bile churning with every shallow breath. This was the cost ledger, tallied daily. This time, though, something felt different. Deeper. It wasn't just the physical need screaming; it was the exhaustion of the soul. I was tired of surviving. Survival demanded constant vigilance, constant performance—the hard edge for the crew, the blank face in public, the desperate hustle when the money ran out. I was tired of being useful only to the darkness.
