The concrete offered no comfort, just a relentless, cold slab pressed against my spine. Every breath I took felt stolen, a brief reprieve before the next inevitable confrontation with the sheer, grinding weight of existence. The air in the alley wasn't air at all; it was a thick, greasy soup of exhaust fumes, stale liquor, and the metallic tang of fear, a familiar perfume that clung to my threadbare jacket and seeped into my very bones. That jacket, once brightly colored, now seemed permanently stained the muted grays and browns of urban decay, a perfect camouflage for someone trying to vanish.
It had been weeks, maybe months—time bled together when every minute was dedicated to surviving the next sixty seconds. The illusion of belonging the ‘Crew’ had offered had curdled into a binding contract of obligation and threat. We weren’t brothers; we were interchangeable cogs in a machine built for petty theft and intimidation, held together by shared desperation and the common enemy of the law, or anyone who looked at us wrong.
My initiation was long past, replaced by the grim reality of routine. Early mornings meant shivering patrols, eyes darting, looking for the weak link, the easy mark. Midday was spent huddled near a boiler vent, sharing a single, thin cigarette, rationing out the meager scraps of food scrounged from overflowing dumpsters behind the upscale restaurants where people threw away more food in an hour than I’d seen in a week. Evenings were the worst. That’s when the noise intensified—the drunken shouts from nearby bars, the echoing sirens, and the low, conspiratorial whispers of the others planning the next move.
