Chapter 5
Maya's Intuition
Maya experiences vivid visions linked to the artifact – dark rituals and a desperate plea. She tries to warn Liam and Ethan, but Liam dismisses it as stress. Ethan, however, listens, seeing parallels to his research.
The scent of damp earth and pine needles had always been a comfort to Maya, a familiar embrace after the hurried clamor of the city. But lately, it felt… wrong. A subtle dissonance had crept into the symphony of the woods, a discordant note that vibrated just beneath the surface of her senses. It had started subtly, a prickling sensation on her skin, a fleeting shadow at the edge of her vision. Now, it was coalescing, sharpening into something more insistent, more demanding.
She sat by the window of their small rented cabin, a half-finished sketchpad resting on her lap, her charcoal pencil still. The afternoon sun, usually so warm and inviting, seemed to cast long, skeletal fingers across the worn wooden floorboards. Liam was out, probably trying to force a signal on his phone by climbing the highest hill, bless his optimistic heart. Ethan, she knew, would be holed up in his room, surrounded by his books and printouts, his brow furrowed in concentration.
It was the artifact, she was sure of it. The dark, obsidian shard they’d unearthed from its mossy grave. Since bringing it back, a gnawing unease had settled over her, a cold dread that no amount of warm tea or familiar surroundings could dispel. The nightmares had started for Liam, she knew, and she’d felt the shift in Ethan, his quiet intensity morphing into something akin to obsession. But for Maya, it was more than just unsettling dreams or late-night research. It was visions.
