Chapter 4
Ethan's Obsession
Ethan, driven by curiosity and a growing sense of responsibility, researches the artifact. He finds fragmented legends of a pact and a bound entity. He keeps his findings secret, feeling a pull towards the object.
The air in Ethan’s room felt thick, not with the usual scent of old paper and dust motes dancing in the afternoon sun, but with something heavier, something that pressed down on his chest. The artifact, a smooth, obsidian shard no bigger than his palm, lay on his desk, nestled in a velvet-lined box he’d salvaged from his grandmother’s attic. It was a strange thing, cool to the touch even on this sweltering summer day, and it seemed to absorb the light, leaving a small, permanent shadow around itself. Ethan traced its unnerving perfection with a fingertip, a knot of unease tightening in his stomach.
He’d spent the last two days immersed in the hushed halls of the university library, pouring over ancient texts and dusty folklore collections. His usual academic pursuits felt like a distant hum compared to the insistent thrumming of this new, terrifying puzzle. Liam and Maya had called, their voices laced with a nervous energy that mirrored his own, but he’d brushed them off, citing a sudden surge of academic interest. The truth was, he couldn’t bear to share the gnawing fear that had taken root. He felt… responsible. He’d been the one to suggest that particular trail, the one that led them to that hidden alcove, the one where the ground had yielded this cursed thing.
His search had yielded fragments, whispers of a pact made in blood and shadow, of an entity bound to an object, its power leashed but never extinguished. The legends were scattered, contradictory, like shards of a broken mirror reflecting a distorted, terrifying image. One scroll, brittle and smelling of decay, spoke of a “Whispering Lord,” a creature of immense hunger, promised dominion over souls in exchange for a forbidden power. Another, a tattered fragment from a forgotten grimoire, mentioned a “Pact of Chains,” where a mortal hand had sought to bind the infernal, only to forge a prison that pulsed with the very essence of its captive.
