The oppressive silence of the night pressed in on Liam, a suffocating blanket woven from the threads of his deepest fears. He tossed and turned, the familiar, chilling dread coiling in his gut. The forest outside his window, usually a comforting presence, felt like a cage, its shadows alive with unseen movement. He was running, always running, his lungs burning, his heart hammering a frantic rhythm against his ribs. But this time, it wasn't just the wind in the trees that pursued him. This time, he could hear them – the low, guttural whispers, the scraping sound of something heavy dragging itself through the undergrowth.

He squeezed his eyes shut, willing himself awake, willing the nightmare to recede. But it clung to him, a parasitic leech draining the warmth from his very soul. The air in his room grew heavy, thick with a scent he couldn't quite place – something like damp earth, old iron, and a faint, acrid char. It was the same scent that had clung to the artifact, hadn't it? A cold dread, sharper than any nightmare, pierced through his sleep-addled haze. This wasn't just a dream.

He bolted upright, sweat plastering his hair to his forehead. His breath came in ragged gasps. The room was still dark, illuminated only by the weak moonlight filtering through the curtains. But the shadows… they were different. Deeper, more substantial, as if they had detached themselves from the walls and were now pooling in the corners, coalescing into vaguely human shapes. He could see them now, not just feel their presence. Tall, gaunt figures, their outlines blurred and indistinct, like smudges of charcoal on paper. They weren't moving, not overtly, but he could feel their attention, a palpable weight pressing down on him.
