Chapter 9

Chapter 9 — Exposure and Other Forms of Vulnerability

Elara photographs Senator Mercer entering Cross's private suite with a minor, securing critical evidence. Kael monitors exit routes from the loading dock. Cross's security detects Elara's presence during extraction, forcing her to flee through the venue crowd. She and Kael regroup at his apartment where they review the photographs and confirm they have enough to dismantle Cross's operation and Mercer's political career. Their physical and emotional intimacy deepens as they process the night's events. The chapter ends when Elara returns to her studio to find it has been ransacked and a second note left on her easel: a photograph of her and Kael together at the previous event, crossed with a red line.

DuVall hadn't sent that message; she'd been clear about her role, and anonymous tips weren't part of the arrangement. I filed the question and kept moving because the alternative was standing in a dark hallway waiting for answers I didn't have time to find.
