Chapter 5
Chapter 5 — The Architecture of Patience
Elara spends the ten days before the second Cross event preparing operation logistics, planting surveillance equipment backstage, and navigating her intensifying connection with Kael through encrypted messages and one in-person meeting at her studio. She identifies Cross's pattern of targeting vulnerable fans through NDA-backed private sessions and maps the venue's camera blind spots with Kael's help. Their planning session at her studio becomes physically intimate for the first time, culminating in a heated kiss before Kael leaves. Elara discovers that Cross has added security for the upcoming event, suggesting he may be aware of increased scrutiny. The chapter ends with Elara confirming the operation is a go and receiving an anonymous message warning her to back off.
Ten days is a peculiar unit of time. Long enough to build something. Short enough to make you sloppy if you pretend it's longer.
I spent the first three days not thinking about the forehead kiss. This went about as well as you'd expect, given that I'd successfully compartmentalized murder for six years but couldn't file away one gesture from a man who could bench-press a compact car.
Professional. That's what I told myself. Two operators coordinating a takedown. The fact that my skin remembered the exact pressure of his lips was just... neuromuscular memory. Residual data. Completely irrelevant tactical noise.
I'm lying, obviously. I'm a great liar. It's practically on my resume, right between 'painter' and 'previously enjoyed hobbies.'
Day two involved the surveillance equipment. I had a contact in Newark—former military, current paranoid—who supplied me with button cameras the size of aspirin and audio recorders that fit inside guitar picks. I bought six of each. Three for Cross's venue, three for redundancy, because optimism is for people who've never watched evidence disappear inside a police filing cabinet.
Kael texted me that afternoon: DuVall meeting confirmed. She thinks I'm considering representation. Gave me forty-five minutes next Saturday before the event.
Forty-five minutes. I typed back. I need fifteen.
Fifteen it is. What are you doing tonight?
Reconnaissance.
That's not an answer.
It's the answer you're getting.
Three dots appeared. Disappeared. Then: You're infuriating.
I know.
