Chapter 20
Chapter 20 — Endings and Other Forms of Beginning
Elara and Kael race back to the Pennsylvania farmhouse to protect DuVall from Cross's advancing contractors. They arrive to find DuVall barricaded inside. Cross's out-of-state security team converges on the property. Elara and Kael orchestrate a defense of the farmhouse, neutralizing the intruders while DuVall escapes through a rear route with the evidence drives. Cross himself arrives, attempting to leverage the situation, but Elara and Kael corner him with recorded evidence of his crimes and the knowledge that the journalist's story is already publishing. Cross, cornered and outmaneuvered, flees. With Mercer's scandal public, Cross's network dismantled, and DuVall's testimony secured, Elara and Kael return to New York. Elara reclaims her studio. They acknowledge that their violent partnership has become something neither expected—a bond forged in shared darkness and genuine devotion. The chapter closes with them together, contemplating a future shaped by their lethal skills and their love.

'How many cars?' I asked during the second call.
