Chapter 14

Chapter 14 — Mornings After and Other Forms of Honesty

Elara wakes at dawn and immediately begins mapping Diane Hutchins's connections to Mercer's network. She identifies three locations where Cross likely stores his leverage material. Kael receives photos of the two private trackers from his wrestling contact, giving them names and faces to watch for. Elara reaches out to her journalist contact for an update on the Mercer recordings and learns the story is moving faster than expected—publication could happen within days if additional corroboration is secured. DuVall, now awake, provides detailed testimony about Cross's operation, including confirmation that Hutchins personally arranged payments through a shell company called Meridian Consulting Group. Elara and Kael debate whether to retrieve or destroy the stolen surveillance drives before Cross can use them publicly, ultimately deciding on a two-pronged approach: Elara handles the evidence recovery while Kael manages the tracker threat. The chapter ends with Kael identifying one of the trackers from the photographs as a former private security contractor named Dale Fennick, someone he recognizes from the wrestling circuit's fringes—meaning Cross has hired people who already know how to find them.

'You're staring at the ceiling,' he said.
