Chapter 11
Chapter 11 — Trapdoors and Other Openings
Elara and Kael spend the remaining hours before the 11 PM meeting planning their approach to what they recognize as a trap orchestrated by Cross and Mercer. They visit the coordinates—a warehouse in the Brooklyn Navy Yard—during daylight to map entry points and escape routes. Kael identifies security vulnerabilities while Elara plants micro-surveillance on the exterior. Back at the safe house, they review strategy and confront the personal stakes: if Mercer records or kills Elara, the evidence dies with her. Kael proposes an alternative approach—using himself as a visible distraction at the front while Elara enters through a service tunnel. As they prepare, Elara acknowledges that DuVall's betrayal, while painful, may have given them an advantage: Mercer and Cross believe Elara will be alone and predictable. The chapter ends with Elara and Kael leaving the safe house, armed and committed, driving toward a confrontation that will determine whether their evidence survives and their partnership endures.
The coffee had gone cold by the time we finished arguing about service tunnels.
I say arguing. Kael would call it 'tactical disagreement,' because the man had a gift for renaming things to sound less emotional. But when two people are hunched over a laptop at six in the morning pointing at satellite imagery and one of them keeps saying 'absolutely not' while the other keeps saying 'watch me,' that's an argument. I don't care what your operational vocabulary says.
The coordinates led to a warehouse in the Brooklyn Navy Yard. Industrial. Isolated. The kind of building that looked abandoned from the outside but probably had the interior charm of a concrete box with bad lighting. Exactly where you'd lure someone if you wanted witnesses to be absent and screams to be muffled.
