The air in the office felt thick, a syrupy haze that clung to the skin and made breathing a conscious effort. It was late, the usual hum of the city muted to a distant thrum, and the only sounds were the soft click of Sophia’s keyboard and the almost imperceptible rustle of Joseph’s expensive suit jacket as he paced behind her desk. He’d been pacing for a while, a restless energy radiating from him, a predator circling his prey. She kept her eyes fixed on the screen, her fingers dancing across the keys, a practiced nonchalance her only shield.

“You’re very efficient, Sophia,” Joseph’s voice, a low rumble, broke the silence. It was a compliment, delivered in a tone that was both appreciative and possessive, like a collector admiring a rare artifact.

Sophia offered a small, tight smile, not turning around. “Thank you, Mr. Sterling.” She kept her voice even, a delicate balance between respect and a carefully constructed distance.
