The air in his office, usually thick with the scent of expensive leather and his own cologne, now seemed to hum with a different kind of energy. It was a charged silence, punctuated only by the rhythmic tick of the grandfather clock in the corner, a sound that usually soothed him but today felt like a countdown. Sophia sat across from him, her gaze fixed on the papers spread between them, but I could see the slight tremor in her hands, the almost imperceptible way her shoulders tensed. It was a dance we were doing, a slow, deliberate waltz on the edge of something I craved and she, I suspected, dreaded.

I leaned back in my chair, the smooth leather a familiar comfort against my tailored suit. “You’ve been working late quite a bit lately, Sophia,” I said, my voice a low rumble, carefully modulated to sound casual. It was a lie, of course. She’d been working late because I’d *made* her work late, conjuring reasons, piling on tasks, all to keep her within my orbit, within my sight.

She finally looked up, her eyes, those wide, innocent pools of blue, meeting mine. A flicker of something I couldn’t quite decipher passed through them – fear, perhaps, or maybe just exhaustion. “Yes, Mr. Sterling,” she replied, her voice soft, almost a whisper. “There’s a lot to do.”
