The hum of the air conditioning was a low, constant thrum against Sophia’s eardrums, a sound that usually faded into the background of her workday. Today, however, it felt amplified, a nervous tremor accompanying the rise and fall of each breath. She was filing reports, the crisp paper a cool contrast to the prickle of sweat on her palms, when the discreet chime of the reception bell announced a visitor. It wasn’t uncommon for clients to drop by unannounced, but the hushed tones of the receptionist, the slight shift in the office’s atmosphere, told her this was different.
Joseph’s private office door, always ajar when he was expecting someone, remained firmly closed. A ripple of unease, a familiar guest in her chest these days, began to unfurl. She glanced at her screen, feigning intense concentration, but her senses were on high alert, attuned to the subtle shifts of the room.
Then, she saw her. Standing near the entrance to Joseph’s suite, a woman of a certain age, her presence radiating an almost regal stillness. She was dressed impeccably, in a tailored charcoal suit that spoke of quiet wealth, her silver hair pulled back in a sophisticated chignon. There was an elegance about her, a composure that Sophia, in her own youthful haste, felt she could only aspire to.
