The late hour had a way of blurring the edges of the day, of softening the harsh lines of reality into something more pliable, more yielding. The office, usually a place of crisp efficiency and polite distance, felt different tonight. It was just Joseph and me, the city lights painting streaks across the darkened windows, the hum of the air conditioning a low, constant thrum beneath the silence. He’d insisted we stay late, a vague mention of a crucial project, but the air had been thick with something else, something unsaid, for hours.

I’d been meticulously organizing files, my fingers tracing the cool, smooth paper, trying to focus on the task at hand, on the professional facade I’d so carefully constructed. But his presence, a heavy weight in the room, made it difficult. He was at his desk, ostensibly working, but his gaze kept drifting towards me, a slow, deliberate appraisal that made my skin prickle. He’d always been observant, his eyes missing nothing, but tonight, his attention felt less like professional scrutiny and more like… possession.

He cleared his throat, a sound that seemed amplified in the stillness. “Sophia,” he began, his voice a low murmur, “you’ve been working so hard. Such dedication.”
