The air in the office had grown thick, heavy with unspoken words and the scent of expensive cologne that clung to him like a second skin. Each tick of the grandfather clock in the hall, a relic from a more opulent era, seemed to amplify the silence between us, a silence that was no longer comfortable, no longer merely pregnant with possibility, but taut with a gathering storm. I smoothed the fabric of the silk blouse he’d chosen for me, the one that felt both too thin and too revealing, a constant reminder of his gaze that seemed to strip me bare before I even entered his office.
He sat behind his vast mahogany desk, his usual air of effortless command now tinged with an impatience that prickled my skin. His eyes, usually sharp and assessing, held a darker, more possessive gleam as they traced the curve of my collarbone, the delicate line of my jaw. It was a look that promised both adoration and ownership, a dangerously intoxicating blend that left me feeling both seen and utterly exposed.
“Sophia,” he began, his voice a low rumble that vibrated through the polished wood of the desk and into my chest. He didn’t use my surname, never did when he wanted to erase the professional distance, to remind me of the ‘special’ status he’d bestowed upon me. “You look… exquisite today.”
